The "Riviera" residential complex, designed by Domenico Bortolotti and built between 1968 and 1972 in Lignano Riviera, at Viale del Commercio 11, is a modern architectural example developed over multiple lots. Covering a total area of approximately five thousand square meters across five levels, the project blends residential and commercial spaces in a functional manner. While the upper levels are designated for residential use, the ground floor houses commercial activities, creating a direct dialogue between private and public spaces.

The building's volume is divided into three main cores, an architectural choice that helps mitigate the bulkiness of the structure and adds dynamism to the design. Each floor is characterized by a ribbon of external loggias that emphasizes the horizontal development of the building, providing visual continuity along the facade. These loggias not only offer an aesthetic feature but also serve a functional role by providing private outdoor spaces for the residents.

The vertical articulation is marked by a series of progressive modular setbacks along the building's south facade. This design solution allows for intelligent management of light and ventilation, while also creating a visually interesting facade. The setbacks create a greater sense of depth and highlight the play of light and shadow.

A noteworthy element is the staircase core, visible from Viale del Commercio. This feature serves not only a functional purpose but also gives the building a strong visual impact. The stairs are designed as both a structural and decorative element, defining the entrance to the complex and connecting the different levels.

Overall, the Riviera Residential Complex is a prime example of modern design that integrates functionality and aesthetics, addressing the residential and commercial needs of the urban environment.

Lignano: Public Works and Tourist Development (1970-2000)

In the 1970s and 1980s, Lignano consolidated its position as a major tourist destination, completing significant public works such as the Pineta church, the Town Hall, and the Arena for concerts. Lignano Riviera enriched itself with prestigious architecture, following the best Italian design of the time, while striving to maintain a calm and quiet environment in contrast to the more chaotic tourist development.
