A Journey Through Vacation Architecture in the City of Holidays

BikeandGo, in collaboration with the non-profit cultural association "Raggi e ArchiTetture - Ville di Lignano," has organized this wonderful tour of historic villas!

A bicycle itinerary that will take us to admire artistic forms from the present or recent past, which have made the seaside resort of Lignano Pineta beautiful and famous. Established in the 1950s as an exclusive vacation destination for affluent tourists seeking relaxation in the quiet and privacy of the pine forest.

We will explore the 20th-century architecture in Lignano created by architects from the IUAV - Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia - and other professionals aligned with this style, who have designed significant works intended to serve as a reference for future generations. Not by chance, the thesis for some of these architects was a project for a seaside house.

The villas are often situated at different levels due to the sand dunes and are set within the pine forest, such as Villa Paiani by Paolo Pascolo (1956-57) or Casa Christoff by Gianni Avon (1956-57). Others evoke the architecture of nearby lagoon casoni, like Villa Sordi (1958) by Aldo Bernardis, where architecture and nature remain in perfect balance.

In the mid-20th century, prefabricated concrete panels were experimented with, used in some buildings such as the "Treno" and Villa Sinisgalli (1954-1955), both by Marcello d'Olivo. Modern architecture is represented by Claudio Nardi with the Sbaiz Villas (1994-2000). These projects are a testament to the quality of architecture that together represent a heritage to be respected and cherished.
